Pictures from the Old Country

They say a picture can paint a thousand words, but sometimes there are a thousand memories in there too.

A long time, very dear friend sent me a link to a blog devoted to Port Elizabeth, the harbour city known now for its illustrious son Nelson Mandela, where my gypsy family finally settled in 1970.

Browsing through the exquisite photos posted here, I was transported into the past. Here's a picture of the maternity home, previously a colonial malaria clinic, in which both my babies were born; there's one of the mini "traffic lights" where they learned their road skills so many years ago.

If you ever get the chance to visit South Africa, dearest Reader, please do not confine your trip to the majesty of Cape Town or the flashy lights of Johannesburg. There is a gem just a little further up the coast in which the true heart of the country can be heard strongly beating.

hi Jacquie. So glad you came across our blog and are enjoying the memories so much! We are, as you can probably tell from our posts, absolutely in love with this town! We live in Richmond Hill, and are actively involved in preserving these wonderful unique heritage areas, and trying to sort out the crime situation.... we are slowly winning! I imagine if you were very into the theatre, we would have a few mutual friends, because several years ago we were godd friends with Robin and Alan Williams, and her most delightful parents Pam and Neil Emslie, who are sadly no longer with us. We have lost touch over the years, but occasionaly run into each other at functions. We will try and get a good shot of the opera house soon, we did one from above a while ago, and I have taken a few shots of it, but it is hard to find a good angle in the traffic on White's road! Somewhere I have a photo that I snuck with my cellphone (no cameras allowed) of the set for the historic final performance of Sizwe Banzi is Dead... I think I posted it on my personal blog (link to sue's blog is in PE Daily Photo sidebar)I also recently dragged Max along to a show by Des and Dawn Lindberg which was a retrospective celebrating 44 years in showbiz!
